I was very fortunate enough to attend an event in Miami at the beginning of the week put on by The Family Office Club. It was a great event and I want to share one of the topics that was discussed at the event. The topic has to do with Authority.
The reason why I want to share this concept of authority they presented with you as it falls in line with what this site is about. This site is about you, and your ability to cultivate action. In order to do that at some level you have to have authority.
You might be thinking “My position doesn’t have any authority”. In some sense, you might be right. However, the presenter at this conference I attended presented things in a totally different light. He presented it as “authority is taken, not given”.
He went on to talk about becoming an expert in your niche that would create that authority. Once again, you might thinking you don’t have the ability to create the authority in your current position. I would ask you to take a look at from a different lens.
It doesn’t matter what industry you’re in, your position with your company or if you are self employed. I would guarantee there are things within your industry, your company and/or your position you have ideas about to make things better. I would encourage you step outside of your comfort zone and share your ideas.
Start putting together a plan to execute on those ideas. Start getting feedback from trusted colleagues that will validate your ideas. As you continue down to refine your idea you’ll begin to get social proof which indicates you’re on the right path. You will also begin to get commitment from others to assist you in your process. These are all signs of authority.
You don’t have to be the loud, outspoken extrovert to have authority. All you have to is have the courage to take the first step towards a purpose to take authority. Take the first step today, stop holding yourself back. If you aren’t happy, make a change. Make a change today!
